What's New in WhizFolders 6.0
I'm only showing the major new features or highlights here. The minor improvements, fixes and known problems are documented in the version specific history given at the end of this document.

Highlights of WhizFolders 6.0

Multi-monitor support
Now WhizFolders fully supports Multi-monitor systems so that the positions of windows are remembered and restored correctly on different monitors. Moreover, it tries to fully contain the window within the full virtual desktop so that when you move from a multi-monitor system to a single one, it adjusts the windows to fall within the screen.

Brand new spelling checker
WhizFolders now using a different spelling-checker. The following dictionaries are included: American English, British English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Spanish and Swedish. Also, if you need help in transferring your old spelling-checker ignore lists to the new one, it should be easy. Just look at the help on the spelling checker options.

Universal links
A new feature is implemented in the right-click menu of the topic list that allows you to copy a universal link to a topic or a text position. The idea is that you should be able to put this universal link in Microsoft Word or other Office applications and the link should open the given topic in WhizFolders. You can even paste a universal link in WhizFolders itself as a JumpFile link. For details, please look up help index on Universal links.

Wiki type link making
A new operation "Make Selected Text a New Linked Topic Name" is now available on the right-click menu of the editor. If you select some text and click on this menu, the selected text is made into a link, and a new topic is added with that name, ready for editing.

Jump to selected text now available
If you select some text then all the "Copy Jump to Text Position" type operations change to "Copy Jump to Selected Text." In this case, you get a Jump link that can position on the given selected text. You just need to make sure that the text is unique. This type of jump link when activated will position to the first found occurrence of the given text in that topic.

Backup your documents easily!
Backing up your documents regularly is a good idea. That's why we added a nice backup feature. You can set up a backup folder and copy a document to it with a button click on the toolbar. You can also set up a document to automatically back up when it is closed.

Many options are available, including multiple back up copies every day. Please read about it in Backing up your notes in the help file.

Custom keywords (only in the Deluxe edition)
This is a great new feature! Sometimes, a topic may not actually contain the word that you want to associate with it. For example, a topic may be related to "marketing" but doesn't have the actual word "marketing" in it. You can assign a custom keyword "marketing" to all such topics. Note that although we call them keywords, you can call them anything. They can also serve as bookmarks to various topics and positions in the document. For example, the following picture shows the keywords for the tutorial document and the hits for the keyword "Editing documents." See an article in the Blog related to keywords.

Text templates (only in the Deluxe edition)
This is another great feature! Many times you may want to reuse the text for another topic with some minor changes. This is possible with the use of templates. The templates feature in WhizFolders Deluxe is quite simple. Yet, it has powerful features for advanced users too. You can set up a WhizFolder document to contain templates and then reference this document to insert boilerplate text in other documents. See an article in the Blog related to templates.

New, improved Editor
WhizFolders now uses Microsoft RichEdit 4.1 control for its great table support. We have changed lot of code to support this editor.

The Table Tool (only in the Deluxe edition)

Microsoft RichEdit 4.1 shows tables very well, properly word-wrapped. However, it does not directly support designing the tables. Hence, we have added another tool for designing and inserting tables. Please check out the Insert menu. See an article in the Blog related to the table tool.

Check mark support
Now you can switch on the check mark support on the File Options--Appearance page. See the special note on this new option in the help file.

Auto numbering
File options now includes a new option "Appearance--Show numbered list" item to automatically number the topics in the topic list.

XP Themes Support
WhizFolders supports XP Themes by default now. If you don't like it or see any problems, you can switch off the themes support by deleting the .manifest file accompanying the Exe file for WhizFolders.

Update on the above starting from version 6.0.8: The manifest file is no longer present and you can't switch off themes. If you are using Windows XP theme then it also puts on Office Look and Feel similar to Office 2003 products. You can put it off on the Desktop page of general options.

Vista note: This feature is not present on Windows Vista. However, we have reenabled it in the newer 6.1 editions. The option is reversed in 6.1 so you need to switch the option off to get the office look and feel.

More list types and nested lists
You will see a new pull down item on the editor toolbar, "List Type." This allows you to make other types of numeric lists, for example, (A), (B), (C). Also, now you can nest lists easily. When already in a numbered list, click on the "Increase Indent" button to go to a lower level numbered list and click on "Decrease Indent" button to resume the original list. This can work for many nested levels. You can change the numeric type used at any level by the List Type pull down. WhizFolders tries its best to resume the list number on a level. But if there is a problem, you can correct the list continuation number in the editor by clicking on the button "Change starting number" on the toolbar (next to the List Type pulldown).

Better picture size reduction
Insert Picture is much improved in that it detects large pictures that might cause problems in OLE and gives a tool to reduce their size. It also converts JPGs to bitmaps automatically so that you can now insert JPG files and get them converted automatically. The color reduction is also much improved so you will find very good results even after reducing to 256 colors.

Note on 6.1: In the newer 6.1 edition, we have given a switch on general Editor options that allows you to bring up this wizard on any picture insertion. Otherwise, in 6.0, it appears only for large picture sizes in order to reduce the size.

Zooming
You will see a new pulldown button on the toolbar showing "No zoom." You can use it to zoom the text in the viewer or the editor. Note that this doesn't change your font size settings. It just zooms the view.

Auto hide on main window
You will see a new button Auto Hide on the main window. Click it to switch it ON, and the main window goes out of the way whenever you are working on a document.

Main Window improvements
  • Improved list of documents: The main list now also displays the location of the document. Also, you can sort the list by document names or by location by simply clicking on the column heading.
  • Drag and drop: Now you can also drag and drop WhizFolder documents from Windows Explorer to add to the main window list. The items can also be dragged around. Previously only drops of file names from Explorer was implemented.

  • More right-click operations: You can right-click on the main window document list, and do a rename of a document or copy or move the selected documents to another location. A right-click operation also allows to open the containing folder. The following picture shows all the useful operations available on the right-click meny of the main window document list.
  • Minimizes to tray by default: WhizFolders now minimizes to the tray icon or notification area by default when you close the main window or minimize using the red minimize icon. You can switch it off on the General Options--Taskbar page. Earlier these options were off by default.

Printing Options improvements
These are available on "General Options-Printing Multiple Topics" page. For example, see Move TOC to the beginning and Put blank page after if needed. There are many other features added for printing. You will find them in general options as shown below.

Margins in centimeters
If you prefer entering the print margins or paragraph spacing in centimeters, press a button on the corresponding dialogs to set up your preference to "Allow entry in cms." Then WhizFolders remembers it.

Customizable keys for operations
A complete list of key combinations for various operations can now be seen on the menu "Help--List keys for operations" on the document window and on the separate editor window. It also allows to customize the keys.

Topic name template
In the New Topic page for the File Options of a document, you will see a new choice for "Start the topic name with." You can actually specify a template or text where the topic name can be embedded inside it. Just put <topicname> in this custom text and it will be made up for you based on your template. For example, you can suffix all new topic names with "- Michael" by specifying custom text as "<topicname> - Michael." Also, the entry for the topic names customized in this manner is greatly improved whereby only the name part is selected for you to change quickly after adding a new topic.

New, Reorder Menu Items
A new operation "Reorder Menu Items" is now available at the bottom of the menus that allows you to reorder the menu items. It is recommended that you only put a few most used items at the top and let the others remain unchanged.

More customization options for Toolbars
We have done some major revamping of the toolbar features. You may see many of the new features even without resetting the toolbars. But if you don't see a new feature and want it, you can do a reset of the toolbars for that particular window. You will have to repeat the customization of the toolbars again as necessary, hopefully for the last time in this version. In future, we will merely give you an informational message when the toolbars change so that you can find the new features on the menus and move them to your customized toolbars if needed.

Here are the main points regarding the new features in toolbars:
  1. If you just want to remove some buttons or the whole toolbars, you can do that by clicking on a down arrow on the right of the toolbar. For this you don't need to click on Customize.
  2. If you click on Customize toolbars, you can now change almost all the toolbars by moving, adding or removing buttons. Even the editor toolbar can be customized.
  3. You can change the icons on the toolbar buttons by first clicking on Customize and then right-clicking on a button to select a different icon.
  4. You can move or drag the toolbars to any position by their grips on the left hand side. You can move them to top, right, left or bottom with very few exceptions.
  5. The editor toolbar can even be dragged to make it floating. You can make a floating editor toolbar transparent by using a transparency value at the bottom of the toolbar.

Export to MS Word Outline RTF
On the menu "Tools--Export selected topics," a new menu item appears that allows you to export the RTF in a Word Outline format. You need to open the resulting file in Microsoft Word to appreciate how this feature works. Note that we have not been able to process the hyperlinks yet to convert them into Word hyperlinks. But we are looking at the possibility.

Added new Sort menu
Since alphabetical sort of the topics is required often, a new menu item "Sort All the topics Alphabetically" is now available under Sort Topics menu.
