How to keep your notes (rather, not to keep) in Windows Explorer

Notes kept in the explorer The picture on the right shows a Windows Explorer screen. Different note files have been created in Wordpad and kept in a file system folder "i:\my notes." You could do the same with Notepad.

What is wrong in keeping notes this way?

Here are a few major limitations to start with,

  • You can not customize the order of notes in the list unless you rename them to keep a number at the start of the name. That can soon get out of control when you need to change the order or insert more notes in between.
  • Some characters are not allowed in file names, so you are forced to use underscores or spaces.
  • Suppose you created subfolders to make a hierarchy of notes, you can't quickly see the complete hierarchy of notes at once. You are limited to seeing the hierarchy of only the folders in the left pane of Explorer.
  • There is no way to print the list of notes, or print the hierarchy (tree list) of notes.
  • There is no way to print all the notes together with a nice table of contents.

Why so many limitations?

Well, Explorer is a generic file manager and not a note manager. But that's what you are forced to use if you use Notepad, Wordpad or other such text editors/word processors to create separate note files.
